Bees In The Bible

Ocassionally I get messages and queries about references to honey bees and honey in holy books, and especially about bees in the bible, for example:

Hi, did you know that bees are mentioned in the Bible (and honey) lots of times? - Jean, USA.

Yes, I had noted this, and I find it interesting that bees (the honey bee - Apis mellifera in particular) along with honey, are mentioned not only in the bible, but in other holy books too, including the Koran (Quran) and in the Hindu Vedas.

What Are The References To Honey And Bees In The Bible?

Below you'll find a collection of passages from the bible containing references to bees and honey for those who wish to investigate this subject more deeply.

A few interesting points:

  • Honey is used within the context of good, abundance and blessing.  There are frequent references to "a land flowing with milk and honey" - which we can perhaps take to be an allegory for a land of abundance, or land that would proivded abundantly for the people.
  • Honey may represent the message or word of God.  In ancient times among various peoples and religions, bees were seen as messengers of the Gods.  For example, according to Egyptian mythology, when the god Re cried, his tears turned into bees upon touching the ground, to deliver messages to man.
  • Honey is sometimes referred to as a precious gift.

However, I don't claim to be able to interpret the Bible! For me, many of the passages are difficult to understand in modern times, but it would be interesting to gain a scholarly and mystical view of some of the passages.

Below are the ones I could find.  I have categorized them by:

  • references to bees in the Bible, including swarms.
  • references to honeycomb and honey in the Bible.

Please note that the passages are from the King James version.
